Sandbridge Takes A Hit
The beachfront cottage I stayed in (with Kai and Jan, Jan's parents Jackie and Otis, and Mom) received a royal dose of Ernesto. The skylights leaked (don't install them, they always leak!), the formerly pristine swimming pool ended up full of sand and sandcrabs, and the surf and wind were wild beasts howling at our windows for two days.
Mary called from Delaware and said she heard the island was being evacuated, but that was news to us. By the time she told us that, roads were impassable, so we just enjoyed being in not-quite-a-hurricane. The most fun was walking in the surf at high tide just after the eye of the storm passed and rain abated. The surf and foam was amazing and waves looked like they might take out the Sandbridge Pier, but didn't (at least not while we watched). The waves would crest at the bottom of the pier walkway and move along it all the way to the beach.
Prior to the storm, "wild ponies" (ha, I petted them on the face) grazed in Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Kai and Jan found seas calm enough for kayaking.
